Penang’s Ride of Silence 2012

Time : 8:45pm to 11:00pm
Route : Padang Kota Lama to Paragon Gurney Drive (10kms)
Targeted Attendees : 250 riders
The Ride of Silence is a worldwide event held on every third Wednesday in May. This year is the 10th anniversary for the annually held Ride of Silence. No registration fees are required.
The ride aims to raise awareness amongst motorists, police and city officials that cyclists have a legal right to the public roadways. This is also a chance to show respect and honour the lives of cyclists who have been killed or injured.
This year, G Club plans to join this worldwide movement to increase public awareness in Penang. It is imperative that before anything untoward should happen, we must be proactive to advocate the right attitude for the road users and cyclists alike. Increasing awareness for the cyclists and other road users to Share The Road is the beginning of a mutual understanding between one another.
The global rules for Ride of Silence:
- Must ride less than 20km/h
- Must wear helmet and be equipped with lights.
- Must follow traffic rules.
- Must ride in silence as a mark of respect.
The agenda as below :
2045hrs Arrival of cyclists to Padang Kota. They are advised to cycle to the destination instead of bringing it with their cars/vans.
2100hrs Start of event. Address by YB Chow Kon Yeow in traffic safety and importance to Share The Road.
2110hrs Sharing of experiences with fellow cyclists who have had accidents or known families who have had deaths in cycling accidents by special guest.
2120hrs Speech from Ketua Polis Pulau Pinang in support of Sharing the Road and traffic safety.
2130hrs Start of ride. (Ride stewards will turn away cyclists who turn up without helmet or bicycle lights)
2230hrs Ride adjourned at Paragon Gurney Drive.
